Thucydides inaugurated a less expansive genre of history with a sharp focus on politics and military affairs. His History of the Peloponnesian War,with its combination of rigour, realism, but also subtle rhetoric, has proved politically influential down to our own day. Cleon was an Athenian general during the Peloponnesian War. He was the first prominent representative of the commercial class in Athenian politics, although he was an aristocrat himself.
